Located in the beautiful Turks and Caicos Islands, OTIONOS is proud to offer an exclusive Eco Volunteer Program for those that wish to immerse themselves in an exciting adventure and good cause.

Otionos offers exclusive eco volunteer programs from 1 week up to 2 months.  Under the supervision of marine biologist Lee Munson you will learn a variety of survey techniques and participate in our ongoing studies. 


Want to know more about Humpback Whales on the breeding grounds?  As a volunteer with OTIONOS you will gain an incredible insight in to these animals.   Taking part in our ongoing research, volunteers will actively participate in whale research trips with an aim to gather behavioral response data, identification photos, audio records and abundances - data that is critical for the management and conservation of these animals. 

5 days a week are spent at sea, searching for a spout, a breach, or a fin slap! At this point the survey begins and we take up our research positions, the success is in the approach, something we have refined over four seasons. A singing male, competitive groups and mothers and calves can all be recorded on the Turks Bank. The data we collect will support DEMA in managing this resource for sustainable use in the future. 
Become a Reef Check certified Eco Diver with OTIONOS!  In this volunteer program you will not only learn the techniques, you will also get to utilize them in becoming part of our research team assisting DEMA with much needed research around the Turks and Caicos Islands. Our research is  subject to current marine issues and as such may involve, Lobster survey, Conch, Reef and Lion fish Investigations. 

Spend your day enjoying the company of like-minded individuals - in the beautiful sun and turquoise water - gathering data and learning from experienced marine biologist Lee Munson.
Become a Reef Check Eco Diver  while diving  the beautiful coral reefs of the Turks and Caicos.  Learn research techniques, specie identification, conduct surveys as part of a research team, and be able to use this knowledge and qualification worldwide as a Reef Check certified Eco Diver.

Also, participate in our ongoing Humpback Whale research and gain insight in to these magnificent creatures.  Fully integrate into the OTIONOS research team -  record data, take GPS points, record whale songs from the Hydrophone, practice your wildlife photography, and participate in the response to snorkeler study. This is critical research with real conservation value.
For the past two years OTIONOS has collaborated with Salt Cay Divers and the Department of Environment and Maritime Affairs (DEMA) to assess the impact that boats and snorkelers have on the behavior of Humpback Whales on the Turks Bank. 
We will continue with this research every year in hopes of understanding the more long term impact of these in-water encounters.  We welcome all enthusiasts to come join in this amazing experience and research.  These animals are truly amazing and inspiring creatures of the sea.
